In 1978, I became a major Las Vegas fanboy at the ripe old age of 13 and thought this city was better than anything Disneyland could throw at me…outside of the PeopleMover and the rest of Tomorrowland.
My Vegas obsession got pretty serious as I collected brochures, postcards and whatnot from various hotels and casinos like a young tyke would collect baseball cards of his favorite players.
It even got to the point that I recorded commercials of these hotel/casinos from the airwaves of the 50,000 watt radio station KDWN-AM. Never mind the music, which the format was at the time Big Band music from the 40’s and 50’s, I was all about the spots!
The spots you’ll hear in this set are for establishments that are largely gone now. At the end of Part 2, there’s a live broadcast for the grand opening of the sci-fi themed Orbit Motel & Casino in the downtown area that went out of business 30 years ago and the building was finally torn down in 2011. I wish I saved more of those broadcasts.
I’m surprised that these tapes survived as they were recorded on cheap lesser-than-Radio-Shack quality tapes with a Sears boom box, 300 miles from Vegas in my grandmother’s house in Grover Beach, CA. Thus there’s some volume dips and static I had to tweak around with.
